I'm slowly becoming a bigger and bigger Mick Jagger fan. I remember my first year of college, I was signed up for an Honors class. This class had no real method to its madness, and we really talked about whatever our prof felt like talking about or reading or watching or doing. One day, for no reason beknownst to me (I was distracted by so many things my first year that I never knew what or why things happened IN class), our prof gave us a documentary to watch on the Rolling Stones called Gimme Shelter, about the infamous Altamont Free Concert in 1969. The Stones wanted to throw a free concert to the public, and it quickly grew into a Woodstock-like event for concertgoers all over the world. The documentary chronicled the planning, the show, and the violence many nude, mushroom-satiated concertgoers suffered at the hands of the Hell's Angels motorcylce club, who had been commissioned as security for the show.
Aside from being an absolute heartbreaking and telling display of the reality of , and demise of the 60's, and the tension between the vets, the peace creeps, the suits, and everyone in between, it provided my first glimpse into the breathtaking music of the Rolling Stones. I watched that doc again this weekend for the first time in years, and its still one of the most captivating music concert documentaries I've ever seen.
